The events were reported as nothing short of a national scandal; such was the public outcry that some politicians even called for the church to be forced to obey UK equality laws. The church hung its head in shame – partly because of its failure to include women in all its offices, but mostly because its governing organisation had been exposed as a body riddled with factional politics.
