He went on to play in several other groups before becoming Wilko Johnson’s replacement in Dr Feelgood. He stayed with the band for four years, playing on six albums and co-writing some of their songs. He was known as John Mayo until, after he contracted several minor ailments, the band’s lead singer Lee Brilleaux complained “you’ve always got the gyp”. From then on he was known as Gypie.
