You get a kind of tunnel vision where you can focus entirely on the task at hand at the expense of all other distractions. But they also make you irritable, totally uninterested in others and regularly needing the loo. They’re useful for taking notes, the academic equivalent of manual labour, but not much else. Everyone is still going crazy for them, because they sound like the perfect shortcut to giving us what we want.
