That’s me second from the right. Before this I worked in the War Office but I was terribly bored, as was my friend Eve Griffin. But you couldn’t just walk out, you had to have a jolly good excuse. Then one day Eve spotted a newspaper article about a scheme taking on girls as crew for canal boats, because all the men were off fighting. We didn’t know anything about canals but that didn’t matter. We just wanted to get out in the fresh air. We became trainees for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company Ltd which carried iron, aluminium and coal from London up to places such as Birmingham. |
