Retain archives all mobile communications for BlackBerry Devices via the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).   Retain for BES does not require that an app be installed on each BlackBerry device. This is because it pulls data and information directly from the BES Server itself. And Retain for BES archives all data to the Retain unified archive database.  

One thing to keep in mind is Retain can only archive data the the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has written to disk.  The archiving process can not go into the actual BES and extract data.  For example BES will supply the text information for a MMS/Picture message but will not write the actual picture to disk.  This means when Retain archives MMS/Picture messages the picture will not be archived either.  An attachment will show that represents the picture but the attachment will be empty (0KB)

The first step toward archiving BlackBerry device data is the 'Module Configuration' withing Retain.  Once the BlackBerry module withing Retain has been setup successfully you will move forward to adding a schedule, profile, worker and job within the Retain Web UI.
